Real examples of how research has affected lives
Survey research has played a key role in the development of a wide number of products, services, and government programs.
But, for these improvements to continue, it’s critical that you participate. Without the opinions of all of those selected to participate in studies- the government, companies, and nonprofits may not get accurate feedback.
A few examples of how survey research has touched lives include:
- Food & Beverage (Freezers in grocery stores, ice-cream sold in grocery stores)
- Automotive (Car safety features)
- Healthcare (improved record keeping for immunizations, warning labels on products)
- Entertainment (Television shows such as Will and Grace)
- Nondurable Goods (TV dinners, disposable diapers, plastic containers in bathrooms, child-proof medicine caps, “ouchless” band-aids)
Survey research has had a profound influence on society- all through linking the public’s opinions to business, government, and nonprofit organizations.

Lipton: Developments in Iced Tea
Lipton hired PortiCo Research hoping to better understand the preferences of the public towards tea. Through PortiCo’s research, Lipton learned that Americans by-and-large prefer iced tea instead of hot tea. Additionally, when Americans do drink hot tea, they usually prefer flavored herbal teas.
At the time, Lipton did not have a very large selection of flavored herbal teas. However, after PortiCo’s studies, they introduced a new line including a much larger selection. Lipton also shored-up their Brisk Iced-Tea line and developed a new product of Iced-Tea that could be made with cold water (instead of boiling).
